En janvier 2006 nous sommes allés pour la quatrième fois dans ce pays magnifique qu'est l'Ethiopie (après deux raids à VTT en 1998 et 2003, et des vacances en famille en 2000). Alors qu'auparavant nous avions découvert une partie du sud du pays cette fois-ci nous avons privilégié la "route historique" du nord, avec bien sûr un nouveau séjour à Harar, ville à l'atmosphère si particulière où ont séjourné le poète Arthur Rimbaud et l'écrivain-aventurier Henry de Monfreid.

In January 2006 we went back for the fourth time (after two mountain bike treks in 1998 and 2003, and family holidays in 2000) in this fantastic country: Ethiopia. While previously we had discovered a part of the South this time we favoured the Northern "Historical Road", with naturally a new stay in Harar, a city with a particular atmosphere where Arthur Rimbaud, the Frech poet, and Henry de Monfreid, the writer-adventurer, stayed in the past.

Une petite ville perchée au haut de la falaise dominant la plaine de l'Awash, à près de 3000 m d'altitude et à 170 km d'Addis Abeba. A la jonction des hautes terres et de la plaine plus de 2000 m en contrebas, Ankober est souvent dans la brume et abrite un marché où s'échangent les produits de la montagne et des basses-terres.
Ankober

This town is located at the top of the cliff dominating the Awash plain, at about 3000m high and at 170 km from Addis Ababa. At the junction between the highlands and the plain more than 2000m below, Ankober is often surrounded by the mist and has a famous market where products from high- and lowlands are exchanged.
Un lieu mystique et envoutant avec ses 12 églises troglodytes du 12ème siècle, symbole de l'église othodoxe éthiopienne.
Lalibela

A mystic and bewitching place with its 12 rock-hewn churches of the 12th-century, symbol of the Ethiopian orthodox church.
Ancienne ville impériale et quartier général des troupes italiennes pendant la brève conquête de l'Ethiopie de 1936 à 1941, elle abrite une série de magnifiques châteaux construits au 17ème siècle.
Gondar

Founded in 1635 the city of Gonder served as the imperial capital for 250 years. It is best known for its 17th-century castles and palaces.
Sorte d'eldorado au bord du lac Tana, cette ville dynamique bénéficie d'un climat tropical et d'une ambiance particulière, à peu de distance des fameux monastères cachés sur des îles et surtout des impressionnantes chutes du Nil Bleu.
Bahir Dar

Set at an altitude of 1830m this large town on the southern shore of Lake Tana has a sticky tropical ambience. Bahir Dar is the starting point to discover the famous monasteries hidden on islands and the impressive Blue Nile falls.
Une des villes saintes de l'islam, à la frontière des mondes chrétiens et musulmant, ancienne cité close lieu de tous les trafics et capitale du khat, plante euphorisante exportée dans toute la région de la Mer Rouge. Harar n'est qu'à 250 km de Djibouti.
Harar

The spiritual heart of Ethiopia's large Islamic community, Harar is considered by some Muslims to be the fourth holiest city in the world. Harar is the sort of easygoing, cosmopolitan towns we like so much.
